Scholar Exchange ProgramVisiting scholar and visiting professor programs have rich histories of helping to advance education and new collaborations. For the younger scientist or student, the opportunity to spend an extended period of time in the laboratory of a more senior scientist in a field of interest can be a career-launching experience. Not only do such extended visits allow for a period of intense study, but they confer many additional benefits. First, they allow young scholars who may not be in research intensive institutions or departments to see what the work and lifestyle of a scientist in an active lab is like. Second, it provides an additional role model for the young scientist. Third, the experience of working with a well-known senior scientist can be an exhilarating one for the aspiring scholar and an enormous motivator. Finally, these visits offer excellent networking opportunities to help young scholars expand or develop collaborations and develop leads to new positions for when their current level of training is complete. The benefits are not one-way. The host mentor and laboratory receive new ideas, fresh perspectives, and possible fellows or junior faculty for the future. Such young visitors represent not only a potential opportunity to work up that interesting idea that has been on the back burner due to insufficient time, but also a sense of spirit and vitality that keeps a lab alive.
